What is it?

There are different strains of cannabis. The psychoactive ingredient of cannabis is THC. This active ingredient works on the chemicals released by our brains associated with pain and pleasure.

The 2 most common forms of cannabis are:

Resin – This is usually brown or black blocks which is smoked with tobacco in a ‘joint’.

Skunk – this is made from the dried chopped leaves and buds of the plant. This is often smoked with tobacco in a ‘joint’.


Cannabis has both psychological and physical effects on the human body. Effects can last between 10 minutes and 8 hours depending upon the potency of the substance and the mind-set of the individual. Effects can include (but are not limited to):

  • Euphoria
  • Anxiety
  • Paranoia
  • Increased appetite
  • Loss of motivation
  • Feelings of relaxation
  • Confusion
  • Loss of concentration
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Feelings of ‘creativity’


As cannabis is usually smoked with tobacco there is an increased risk of developing cancers due to the amount of carcinogens contained both within tobacco and the cannabis plant.

Individuals using cannabis over sustained periods of tie have an increased risk of developing mental health problems.
